Noteflight Viewer for iPad and Other Mobile Devices

Big news for Noteflight Crescendo and other premium users! You can now view and play Noteflight scores on most mobile devices and platforms, including iPad, iPhone, Android and Kindle Fire. We’ve made it easy to view and play your scores anywhere – just login to Noteflight.com on your mobile device and tap any score. There’s no app to install or purchase – the mobile viewer is a feature of our website. It automatically comes up when you view a Noteflight score on a mobile device.
You can display a score in either of two ways – as multiple pages sized to exactly fit your mobile device screen, or as a single scrolling page.
When you play a score in multi-page view, we automatically turn the pages for you, which is great for following along with, or performing, the score.
You can display single parts of a score by selecting an individual part from the part chooser.
Note that there can be a delay of several minutes the first time a score is accessed from a mobile device. Our servers need to do a bunch of work to “mobilize” each score – the amount of time it takes depends on how busy our servers are, and how long the score is. Once a version of a score has been “mobilized”, viewing it should take just a few seconds.
When you view a score, we reduce the Noteflight header to a thin black bar to give you the most room to view your score on smaller devices – tap on your browser’s back button to return to the score listings, or you can display the full sized Noteflight header by tapping on the arrow in the upper right corner of the screen.
If you’re using a mobile device that supports Adobe Flash (many Android devices do), you can still access the full Noteflight editor by tapping on the “Open in Noteflight Score Editor” link above the score.
Stay tuned for more developments on the iPad and mobile devices – this is just our first step towards making Noteflight accessible everywhere, for all of our users (free users too)!
Some fine print on our first release (expect improvements in the future):
- Scores with synchronized audio or video media will play the built-in Notelight sounds, and video will not be shown.
- Document layout settings like note size and system spacing are ignored.
- Page mode doesn’t automatically scroll to keep the cursor in view.

Will this feature work within Haiku LMS?
May 17th, 2012 at 11:44 am
@Spiros Yes, it will work for all Haiku/Noteflight customers. However at this time scores that are directly embedded in Haiku pages will only see the embeds on Flash-enabled browsers.

I just accessed it from my Itouch on Safari, and the first time, it was zoomed in a lot and said there was an error. When I went back and reloaded the page, it worked. For the most part, I was happy with it. Some small are that for whatever reason, the sound quality sounds worse than online. (It could be just my headphones) Though that isn’t a big deal at all haha. Also, (I was looking at a larger score of 17 parts) I couldn’t see the entire page while it was sideways. I was able to zoom in/out by doing so on the banner and the gray-brown-ish area below it, and then slid the screen down. I wasn’t able to slide back up or zoom out, so I had to refresh the page to be able to see more than the two measures I was zoomed in on haha. Just little things trying to make you aware of, no big deal at all. If there was a way to make it so you could slide down and therefore eliminate the half-inch that the safari url box takes up, that would be nice (or just make it into an app…that would be best–that way I could save scores on to my device and not need wifi to view/edit scores.) Also, it may be easier if it was able to be viewed in strip mode? idk. Umm so overall, I’m super excited that this is being done, and I’m looking forward to when we will be able to edit scores, even without wifi! Great job guys! (sorry for the essay lol, just writing anything that came to mind)

Will this app be available for iPod Touch?
May 17th, 2012 at 11:25 pm
Does this work with HP touchpads? They run on webOS.
May 18th, 2012 at 12:14 am
Great news Joe – so many times our young OPUS users have wanted to use their mobile devices on school bus or home iPads. This is a massive step forward for educational users – bravo !
May 18th, 2012 at 5:10 pm
Will you make it so that you don’t have to have a Cresendo account to use it on the iPad?
May 19th, 2012 at 9:36 pm
I second concernedhptouchpaduser’s concern. I’m on a touchpad as well. Can you get the website to recognize its browser?
May 20th, 2012 at 1:14 pm
Will it work on Kindle Fire?
May 21st, 2012 at 11:04 am
Yes, it will work on Kindle Fire and also on iPod touch.
May 21st, 2012 at 11:07 am
@Max We have no plans to change this to a free feature at this time. However, we have moved Crescendo features into the free version in the past.
May 21st, 2012 at 11:08 am
@HP users, we have not tested the viewer on your device, but we’re taking a note to circle back to it and see what would be involved in getting it working.
May 23rd, 2012 at 8:58 pm
Will it work on an Acer tablet; well if it does how much does it cost, and what is it called?
May 24th, 2012 at 8:51 am
We have not tested on Acer but if this is a PC tablet, you may not need the mobile viewer as most PCs come with Flash installed.
Our premium packages start at $49/year or $7.95/month.
May 24th, 2012 at 10:20 pm
Thanks, the Acer tablet is basicly a computer, and I have Flash Player on it.
May 27th, 2012 at 2:22 pm
Great news. Works well on my ipad to view and play. Of course, as soon as you have this you want something more immediately- being able to edit on ipad and save to the ipad rather than having to be on w-fi. However, it’s a great step forward. Thanks and full speed ahead please!!!

First, I absolutely love the new feature. I can’t express enough how much I enjoy being able to hear scores on my iPhone. And while understand that it could take a while to “mobilize” editing features as well, I think the main priority right now would be a touch-up on the audio itself. If I’m correct, I believe the mobile score does not recognize the settings people have on their sound mixer, which means that naturally loud Noteflight instruments (such as bassoon and cello) completely overpower some of the quieter sounds (like piano), even though the louder instruments are set to lower decibels on the mixer. If you could find a way to “mobilize” the sound effects of the mixer, that would be amazing. Thank you guys for all your hard work! :)
May 30th, 2012 at 8:20 am
@Roman We’re glad you like the feature! By the way the mixer effects should definitely be applied to the sound output, and we did a quick test just now to make sure this is working — and it seems to be fine. The mixer settings do get used. Is it possible that you did not save some mixer changes in the score?

will this be available for notflight free users also in the future? this would greatly help me, for most of my friends dont actually believe I can write songs

Noteflight – Just want to thank you – - I know it’s not easy answering all our questions and thank you for your persistence. I may draw a surprise from others but I’ve been ecstatic about the simplicity with which I can turn the symphonies in my mind into realities by using what Noteflight has already accomplished.
This is a perfect tool and I never dreamed I could hear my music played out in so many voices – to be able to hear that what I think will work actually does work well when scored.
I also love the fact that by hearing what I have done I can edit symphonic instruments in and out & change them to get the maximum affect.
thank you once again. If you never did another thing I’d be the happiest camper. I look forward to coming home from working two jobs hard and being able to create-away. My poor keyboard does not see me as often now that I can putin violins, violas, two or three keyboards etc. Ha ha. God bless you for bringing music to a new level.

Thanks note flight. I think it’s a great start. I would love to be able to make comments. That would allow me to mark student work but it’s a good start.

I have been trying for so long to show my compositions to my family and friends when there is no computer around. The mobile device viewer is a mega miracle to me, because now I can show my talent to everyone if I deem to. Thank you for being a competitior with the other notation sequences!
June 2nd, 2012 at 12:17 am
GOOD JOB!!! WHAT A GREAT NEWS!
My teacher does not use computer much and she own an iPad. She just want to view my notes but could not!
This is big improvement and I’m sure it will benefit Noteflight in long run.
June 12th, 2012 at 4:19 pm
thats awesome now i can show family and friends who i only see every couple months.
October 15th, 2012 at 4:55 pm
So it’s not available for free users
November 8th, 2012 at 7:12 am
Is this free? How do I get it to work?
November 8th, 2012 at 9:33 am
At present creation of mobile-viewable scores is part of our premium package Noteflight Crescendo, which can be purchased for $49/year or $7.95/month.
The actual viewing of the scores does not require a premium subscription.

Is there an update as to whether or not us iPad/iPhone/iPod users will be able to edit and create music on our devices?
December 11th, 2012 at 12:37 pm
Hi Jami — There has been a huge amount of progress, and we will provide an update soon! Can’t say much more than that, other than to say that having Noteflight function on iOS is one of our very highest priorities, and we think our users will be very pleased with what we’ve done.
January 16th, 2013 at 5:40 pm
Hi jami,
Absolutely there is an update! Please read our press release from yesterday here:

As a young musician I have enjoyed using noteflight for some time now :) when it was revealed that it could be used on tablets, I was excites to use ir on my kindle fire. Unfortunately, every time I tried to pull up a score, there’s an error. Will I have to wait for corrections or am I missing somehing on my device? Thanks a lot!!!
January 25th, 2013 at 3:09 am
I cant have audio with my android ZTE..
January 26th, 2013 at 10:34 am
Android devices do not have Web Audio support yet. Google is working on Web Audio support for Android in the future, but we have no information on release date.
January 26th, 2013 at 10:35 am
We are looking into the problems with the Kindle Fire. We hope to have a solution for this soon.
